Each retains their own unique quirks, from relying upon ranged combat to sheer numbers to overwhelm their opponent.

What separates it from the genre rules established by Westwood Studios is how the game advances. Like all RTS experiences, players are required to build, upgrade and expand their growing army. Yet, there is no base building, or time wasted trying to guard a dozen different structures. Instead, units are rapidly upgraded throughout the game, via branching tech trees. This is used in place of having thousands of unit variants. If you need a unit of snipers, Scouts can be granted rifles and cloaking technology.

Beyond Dawn of War II's multiplayer, the central campaign is a step apart from the usual RTS missions. The story follows the Blood Ravens chapter as they guard their recruitment worlds against an alien incursion. While doing so, they quickly uncover other powers at work and a threat within their ranks. As it is highly character driven, this naturally incorporates several RPG mechanics. Squad commanders gain experience points throughout their missions, unlocking new abilities and units to follow them into battle. Many can be equipped with unique items, and have their own side-quests. While the game features the core mechanics of an RTS, it is more truthfully a blend of two very different genres.
